SAG Film Nominations: Who Surprised, Who Got Snubbed?
Some large surprises within the SAG Award film nominations today--mostly from the bad variety. Latecomers towards the race like "The Lady Using the Dragon Tattoo" and "Very Noisy and extremely Close" were overlooked--from speaking to Nom Comm people, I learned virtually nobody saw either. Despite screeners and special tests, the films have to get available earlier, most likely by Thanksgiving a minimum of. The main one exception is Meryl Streep for "The Iron Lady" but let us be truthful she's Meryl Streep. In conclusion by category:Male Actor inside a Leading Role: DEMIN BICHIR / Carlos Galindo - "A Much Better Existence"GEORGE CLOONEY / Matt King - "THE DESCENDANTS" LEONARDO DiCAPRIO / J. Edgar Hoover - "J. EDGAR" JEAN DUJARDIN / George - "THE ARTIST" Kaira PITT / Billy Beane - "MONEYBALL"Pleased to see Bichir slip set for his great operate in "A Much Better Existence." Not too pleased to begin to see the omissions of Michael Shannon for "Take Shelter" and Michael Fassbender for "Shame." Also, while Gary Oldman did not obtain a jerk for "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy," I do think he'll ultimately have an Oscar nomination. The film is simply now being seen by people, and buzz should build for that lengthy-respected actor within the coming days.Female Actor inside a Leading Role: GLENN CLOSE / Albert Nobbs - "ALBERT NOBBS" VIOLA DAVIS / Aibileen Clark - "The AssistanceInch MERYL STREEP / Margaret Thatcher - "THE IRON LADY" TILDA SWINTON / Avoi - "We Have To Discuss KEVIN"MICHELLE WILLIAMS / Marilyn Monroe - "MY WEEK WITH MARILYN" Can't argue with these nominees. Was beginning to obtain worried for Close, whose been left off some recent lists, such as the Critics' Choice Movie Honours, but stars came through on her. I wouldn't say this list is foolproof if this involves the Oscar nominations, however, as Charlize Theron could still slip set for "Youthful Adult. " Not surprised that SAG did not choose her, as numerous Nom Comm voters I spoken to found the film unfulfilling. But she's not from the race with a lengthy shot.Male Actor inside a Supporting Role: KENNETH BRANAGH / Mister Laurence Olivier - "MY WEEK WITH MARILYN"ARMIE HAMMER / Clyde Tolson - "J. EDGAR"JONAH HILL / Peter Brand - "MONEYBALL"NICK NOLTE / Paddy Conlon - "WARRIOR"CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER / Hal - "BEGINNERS"So relieved Nick Nolte made the cut. But shocked that Albert Brooks, that has been accumulating experts honours for "Drive," was snubbed. Also disappointed Patton Oswalt wasn't famous for "Youthful Adult," when i think he steals the film. But when i stated earlier, the Nom Comm was lukewarm around the movie. I still think Brooks and Oswalt can sneak in to the Oscar race, and would say Hammer and Hill would be the most vulnerable. As always, this is actually the best area--each one of these stars are wonderful.Feminine Actor inside a Supporting Role: BRNICE BEJO / Peppy - "THE ARTIST"JESSICA CHASTAIN / Celia Foote - "The AssistanceInchBethany McCARTHY / Megan - "BRIDESMAIDS"Jesse McTEER / Hubert Page - "ALBERT NOBBS"OCTAVIA SPENCER / Minny Jackson - "The AssistanceInchPleased that McCarthy made the cut, excited Chastain ws recognized, and also the other three aren't any-brainers. I'm surprised, however, that Shailene Woodley wasn't famous for "The Descendants." Would not have loved a jerk on her co-star Judy Greer, but understood it had been a longshot. And Vanessa Redgrave, when the leader for "Coriolanus," continues to be basically forgotten.Cast of the Film: "THE ARTIST""BRIDESMAIDS""THE DESCENDANTS""The AssistanceInchInchNight time IN PARIS" No arguments here. Would be pleased with these fine ensembles winning.Read Back Stage's nominations announcement here. Find Out More ON Behind The Curtain

The Lincoln Lawyer Will Return
Film sequel planned along with TV seriesOne of the quieter and more overlooked successes of 2011 was The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey as Michael Connelly's slick LA lawyer Mickey Haller. A spin-off TV series is already in development at ABC, but Lionsgate vice-chairman Michael Burns has just revealed that Haller will also be heading back to cinema screens. The Haller novels are a kind of subsidiary series to Connelly's larger collection about homicide detective Harry Bosch. Haller is Bosch's half brother, and the two have occasionally shared page space. There are currently 15 books in the Bosch strand, and four in Haller's.If the films follow the novels' chronology, the next ought to be The Brass Verdict, in which Haller and Bosch join forces to investigate the murder of a defence attorney, and uncover corruption in the judicial system. After years in rights limbo, Connelly recently reacquired Bosch from Paramount, so with his involvement, that crossover would certainly be possible, and may serve to introduce Bosch for his own future film franchise. All speculation at this point however: all we have for certain is Burns' assurance that the sequel is underway. Here's hoping that McConaughey remains in situ in the Lincoln town car, Brad Furman gets to direct again, and that John Romano will be on-hand to repeat his sterling work on the screenplay. We'll keep you posted.

Madonna, 'W.E.' Director and Super Bowl Halftime Performer; Is This Harvey Weinstein's Best Year Yet?
As you've probably heard by now, pop icon Madonna will lead the halftime show at Super Bowl XLVI in on Feb. 5, 2012 -- the same weekend that her directorial effort, 'W.E.' arrives in theaters for wide-audience consumption. ('W.E.' will enjoy a one-week limited awards-season run starting on Friday.) It's a stroke of marketing genius on two levels: not only does Madonna and 'W.E.' distribution studio The Weinstein Company get the full compliment of free press that performing at the Super Bowl offers, but 'W.E.' can be positioned as a bit of counterprogramming during a weekend dominated by smelly dudes both on the field and on the couch. Win win! Though little else should be expected from TWC head honcho Harvey Weinstein, a master of marketing and buzz, who has possibly enjoyed his best year yet. To wit: · TWC affixed 'My Week With Marilyn' to pop superstar Katy Perry and her new single "The One That Got Away" in an effort to drum up interest in the film for young girls -- the life-blood of the film industry (see: 'Titanic' and 'Twilight' for reference). So far, the promotion hasn't paid hugh box-office dividends, but 'Marilyn' is still in limited release. Give the film another few weeks and Kitty Purry fans could be lining up to see a film that has absolutely nothing to do with Katy Perry -- beyond that Harvey Weinstein wants KP in a Broadway adaptation of 'My Week With Marilyn.' · Consider Uggie! Spurred on by the estimable S.T. VanAirsdale, Uggie, 'The Artist's' Jack Russell Terrier, has gotten loads of Oscar ("Oscar") buzz in the last week -- from the NY Times to E! to the NY Post. Never mind that Uggie the dog can't actually get an Oscar nomination (too bad he wasn't played by Andy Serkis); by reveling in the grassroots campaign to honor Uggie, TWC has found a relatable way to get audiences to care about a silent, black and white film from France: a cute dog! The Super Bowl, Katy Perry, household pets; what mainstream American fixture can TWC use to promote 'The Iron Lady,' a film about Margaret Thatcher? It's unclear (before you say Iron Maiden, the band is actually from London), but expect TWC to figure something out sooner rather than later. Chris Hemsworth and College Hotties Get the Horror Treatment in The Cabin in the Woods Trailer
If a creepy, tobacco-spitting, rural gas station attendant tells you, “I can get you there… it’s getting back that’s your concern,” as you navigate your way to a weekend house so “off-the-grid” that it doesn’t show up on the most advanced GPS system, you might turn around and floor your RV until you’re safely ensconced in suburban civilization again. But the upcoming Joss Whedon-produced horror flick Cabin in the Woods is not about you and your sensible friends — it’s about a bunch of college hotties (Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Anna Hutchison) who are willing to ignore a football field’s (or whatever unit of measure popular 20-somethings use) worth of red flags if it means they can have a kickass cabin weekend. Of course, since this is a horror film, these crazy carefree kids get more scares in the form of bear traps and death elevators than they bargained for. Since this is a horror film from Joss Whedon though, Cabin in the Woods is not just a 90-minute cliche-fest but a feature that attempts to turn the genre on its severed ear with a subplot involving Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford as “white-collar co-workers with a mysterious connection to the the cabin.” Cabin was the first collaboration between Thor star Chris Hemsworth and Avengers director Joss Whedon, who co-wrote and produced this horror pic, originally slated for a 2010 release. Here, Hemsworth plays a varsity jacket-wearing jock who carries a football, a beer mug or a look of confusion at all times. After filming, Whedon cast Hemsworth for the title role in his Marvel blockbuster Thor, which was released last May. Finally, The Cabin in the Woods — directed by Drew Goddard (who penned Cloverfield) — arrives in theaters April 13. [via Yahoo!]

TV Ratings: 'CSI: NY,' 'Blue Bloods' Slip; 'Supernatural' Steady
Anderson Cooper Show It's official. The U.S. Government has decreed that Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show, Anderson, is a bona fide news interview program.our editor recommendsAnderson Cooper's Daytime Talk Show RenewedAnderson Cooper's Daytime TV Show Posts Ratings Gain Amid Teen TragedyAnderson Cooper 'Saddened' by Teen Coma TragedyAnderson Cooper's Daytime Talk Show Struck by Teen Coma Tragedy There appears to have been some doubt about this. The show topics this week have included such journalistic queries as the ethics of spanking children, how to free one's life from clutter, and a "new trend" of parents gifting their children plastic surgery. ANE Productions requested the FCC's help in clarifying that the daytime talk show is indeed a news program. On Monday, the government agency responded with a thumbs up. Here's the ruling by FCC assistant chief Robert Baker declaring Anderson to be news for purposes of regulations. Specifically, one reg matters most of all -- Section 315 of the Communications of 1934, otherwise known as the "Equal Time Rule." The significance here is that TV and radio stations are obligated to treat political candidates equally, including giving them proportionate time on air. Congress has exempted news shows, though, meaning that if Anderson now wants to hear Newt Gingrich's feelings on spanking Mitt Romney, the stations that carry Cooper's syndicated show aren't obligated to hear what Buddy Roemer has to say too. Of course, there was hardly any doubt that Anderson would qualify for the exemption, even if the show's idea for a fun show oneuthanasia includes "Daniel the Miracle Dog." As the FCC's ruling points out, the TV show Entertainment Tonight has also qualified as a bona fide newscast after the agency decided its "role is not to decide, by some qualitative analysis, whether one kind of news story is more bona fide than another." For some reason, the FCC likes to italicize its bona fides so we will too. REVIEW: Arthur Christmas Overrides Ugly Digital Animation with Charm, Wit and Verve
To dispatch with the pleasantries and get straight to the but: Arthur Christmas favors the late-century style of computer animation that turns characters into smooth, plasticky dirigibles, adding a Made-in-China cello-skin to faces and scenery alike and vacuum-sealing the works for maximum digital freshness. I’ve never cared for the look — if cartoons could be embalmed, that’s how I imagine they’d be — and in sharing a release weekend with a Muppets revival, the limits of Arthur’s CGI puppeteering seem even more stark. That is of course, until you consider almost everything outside of my but — which may well not be yours — which is to say the near-total mitigation of aesthetic bummers with an avalanche of charm, wit, and enlivening, highly oxygenated performances. A collaboration between Sony animation and Britain’s Aardman productions (of Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and Flushed Away fame), Arthur Christmas is a Grinch-style story of rekindled Christmas spirit told from inside Santa’s compound at the North Pole. At one end of the investment spectrum are Santa’s ebullient but highly errant progeny Arthur (James McAvoy) and a million or so obsessive elves, and at the other are Santa himself (Jim Broadbent), a glory hound who’s been phoning it in for years, and Santa’s number one son, Steve (Hugh Laurie), a technocrat who has “festivized” the entire world and broken toy delivery down into a joyless martial art. In the middle is Mrs. Claus (Imelda Staunton), the stealthy home executive who just wants everybody to get along, and out back in the polar pasture rocks 136-year-old patriarch Grandsanta (Bill Nighy), perpetually cheesed about his own irrelevance and sure it all meant more back when Santas traveled by sleigh and not a candy-apple Millennium Falcon. That’s right, it’s a family business, and there is little question about which brother will inherit the ermine-trimmed suit once the current Santa is finally coaxed out of it. But when a mishap causes the wished-for present of a Cornwall girl to go astray, Arthur and the elves are scandalized while Santa and Steve shrug it off, and the question of whether one child matters expands to pit tech innovation against personal consistency, and ego against selflessness. Arthur and Grandsanta commandeer a retired sleigh and some old-fashioned magic to get the little girl her pink bicycle before the night is over, with an eager elf named Bryony (Ashley Jensen of Extras and Ugly Betty) along to literally wrap up problems with festive paper and industrial-strength glitter tape. First-time director Sarah Smith co-wrote the screenplay with frequent Sasha Baron Cohen and Steve Coogan collaborator Peter Baynham, and the writing is brisk and snappy, warm and engaging, and unabashedly littered with Britishisms. It’s a balanced efficiency of tone established in service of the core characters and reinforced by their precision casting and committed performances (McAvoy and Jensen especially blast verve and personality into their roles), so that halfway through a Christmas Eve picaresque we are fully involved in not just a witty lark but a resonant family drama. Which is not to say there isn’t plenty of mischief to grease the way, including cheap shots at Canada (everybody’s favorite), the unlikely triumph of Arthur’s neuroses, and darker riffs involving elves so tightly programmed they go kamikaze at the first (false) sign of abandonment and the sacrifice of “charming relics” to the future. The velocity of the visuals matches the almost vaudevillian pace of the script — no detail is unturned or punchline passed by — and the 3D offers mild, if somewhat superfluous, enhancement to an already engrossing trip. There’s a tepid lesson embedded into the haggling over the true meaning of Christmas and the real Santa Claus: Arthur’s insistence that the means of gift delivery don’t matter (only the spirit of giving and gratitude does) is gentle preparation for that ultimate, beard-yanking disillusionment. I’d be satisfied if Arthur Christmas primed kids for nothing more than expecting nothing less from holiday entertainment than this fleet, sweet-natured film. Follow Michelle Orange on Twitter. Is Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Too Extreme for Oscars?
Over at Entertainment Weekly, David Fincher plays coy joking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’s Oscar chances. [Some spoilers follow, though they’ll come as no surprise to those familiar with Stieg Larsson’s book or Niels Arden Oplev’s 2009 film adaptation.] How likely is is that the Academy will be so turned off by the extremes seen in Fincher’s film that they’d pass it over come nomination day? Mild spoilers follow; excerpt from EW: “There’s too much anal rape in this movie” to get nominated, he says, half-jokingly. “I think we’re very safe.” Over at Awards Daily, Sasha Stone concurs, less jokingly, zeroing in on the idea that films with anal sex may get nominated, but they have a harder time winning. “He’s right, you can’t win. The internet is a Greek chorus that monitors and judges ALL behavior.” True; The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is very, very rapey. It’s the rapiest film to come along in a long time, especially given the high profile and awards season positioning that Fincher’s production and recent Oscar cred carries with it. But those violations are also unavoidable and key to the plot and larger themes, and hopefully Fincher’s stayed true to the extreme, semi-unbearable nature of said events in Larsson’s tale; without having to endure (and avenge) them, a key character wouldn’t be complete. As one counterpoint to the rule, Brokeback Mountain won Oscars including Best Director and Screenplay, though Best Picture that year went to Crash. Dragon Tattoo, however, is far more difficult material then most. It’s not your average feelgood mainstream tale, by a long shot, and one driven by the ugliness of men. (Its original title, translated from Swedish: Men Who Hate Women.) So maybe Fincher’s right. And judging from his cautiously pessimistic comment, maybe he’d just playing the Oscar game safe, hoping to be pleasantly surprised by Academy voters. [Awards Daily, EW]

Jailed 'Austin Powers' Actor Allegedly Killed Cellmate
Already serving time in jail for raping and torturing a woman, 40-year-old actor Joseph Hyungmin Son is the top suspect in the murder of his 50-year-old cellmate. Son -- who starred as Random Task in 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,' a play on the 'Goldfinger' character Odd Job -- was sentenced to life in prison last month after being convicted of felony torture, a charge that stemmed from an incident that occurred on Christmas Eve in 1990. His unnamed cellmate was a 50-year-old male serving a two year sentence for failing to register as a sex offender. In 1990, the actor and a friend kidnapped a woman, repeatedly raped her and threatened her with a firearm before letting her go free. Son was never charged with the heinous crime until an unrelated arrest in 2008 forced him to give a DNA sample which was then linked to the attack. "I feel debilitating fear come over me and am convinced a hand is coming from behind again," said Son's victim, only identified as Jane Doe, in court. "My emotional scars are intense. My 20s were stripped from my life as I relearned how to walk, see, hear and cope with the outside world again. Joseph Son not only cost me my job at my salon but also my college savings ... not to mention the impact it's made on celebrating Christmas year after year." Wasco State prison officials have only named Son as a suspect in the death of his cellmate. A full investigation will take place before charges are filed. TMZ reports that since the incident, Son has been moved to solitary confinement. [via LAT, TMZ] [Photo: AP] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Netflix Scraps Qwikster, Ben Stiller's 'Zoolander' Makes SNL Comeback
Stop your lamenting about Netflix's plan to divide their company in two, because they have already cancelled the launch of their sister site, Qwikster. Announced only three short weeks ago, Qwikster was supposed to take over the DVD rental service that Netflix previously offered. But the immediate consumer backlash led Netflix CEO Reed Hastings to realize that maybe that wasn't such a great idea. He announced today in a statement that the new business model has been scrapped, and Netflix will remain Netflix for the foreseeable future. Check out the rest of today's film news after the jump! Sony Planning Steve Jobs Biopic? With news of the death of former Apple CEO Steve Job still sinking in, Sony has begun negotiations to honor the visionary with a biopic. Deadline has the news, and says that the film will be based on the upcoming Walter Isaacson biopic, "Steve Jobs," that will be released later this month. No word yet on the expected turn around time for the movie. FilmDistrict Sued Over "Drive" Marketing Many would count the fact that "Drive" is nothing like this year's "Fast Five" as a good thing. Not so for Michigan resident Sarah Deming, who filed a lawsuit against FilmDistrict because the marketing for the Ryan Gosling flick misled her. "[The studio] promoted the film 'Drive' as very similar to the 'Fast and Furious,' or similar, series of movies," the suit reads according to Moviefone. "'Drive' bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film... having very little driving in the motion picture." There's no denying that "Drive" was selling a different movie than it actually was, but Deming's suit seems a bit extreme. She is calling for the end of "misleading movie trailers," and is also saying that the film contained "extreme gratuitous defamatory dehumanizing racism directed against members of the Jewish faith." Zoolander Returns In Visit To "Saturday Night Live" Ben Stiller hosted this week's "Saturday Night Live," and during the Weekend Update segment brought back his cult character Derek Zoolander. It's no secret that Stiller has been working on a sequel to the 2001 film "Zoolander," so we're hoping this is just a smart publicity stunt. Watch the hilarious segment below. Real Life Quarterback Princess Wins Football Game, Homecoming Crown in Same Night
Back in 1983, a young Helen Hunt starred in the CBS telefilm Quarterback Princess, the true story of a plucky Oregonian teenager named Tami Maida who made it onto her high school’s all-male football team and nabbed the homecoming queen crown, marking a triumphant moment for female athletes. Last week, Brianna Amat of Pinckney, Michigan did the same; after being crowned at halftime during homecoming, the 18-year-old returned to the field to win the game for her team. Technically, Amat is a kicker and not the quarterback for the Pinckney Pirates, but still; as a tomboy of the ’80s I adored and watched Quarterback Princess so many times, I’ll always root for any girl who wants to play with the boys. (Also see: Little Giants, Necessary Roughness, and Backfield in Motion for the same, albeit with varied results.) From the NY Times: When she arrived, she was told that her fellow students had voted her queen. When the tiara was placed on her head, she was wearing not a dress, like the other girls in the homecoming court, but her No. 12 uniform, pads and all.A short while later, with five minutes to play in the third quarter, Amat was called to the same field to attempt a 31-yard field goal. She split the uprights. The kick proved decisive as Pinckney held on for a 9-7 victory against a Grand Blanc team that had come into the game ranked seventh in the state in its division. It also earned Amat the nickname the Kicking Queen. As for Quarterback Princess (which co-starred a young Daphne Zuniga in her second screen role and was directed by Noel Black, who also made the Phoebe Cates ’80s flick Private School and the soap teen series Swan’s Crossing), trailer and clips are apparently nowhere to be found online. So just trust me; it was a great, rousing picture. Helen Hunt gets a pass for life just for being a part of it. The Kicking Queen [NYT] Watch Transformers 3 Megavideo

Keck's Exclusives: Start Searching at Glee's Lucky Charmer
Damian McGinty On November 1, the initial in the Glee Project's two grand-prize individuals who win, Damian McGinty, makes his Glee debut as Irish exchange student Rory Flanagan. "I am getting duration of my existence," looks at the Derry, Ireland, native, who certainly take presctiption this program not under seven episodes. "Rory is dealing with Brittany [Louise Morris], who thinks he's her own personal leprechaun only she'll see." Because the cast needed to Damian immediately, not everyone at McKinley High values the sophomore's charms. "He's doing slightly falsetto within the first song, and Kurt did not such as this because Kurt's the soprano in the group and doesn't want that acquired from him," states Chris Colfer. And Santana "quietly is deeply deeply in love with Brittany," adds Damian, "so she isn't keen on Rory as they also provides an issue for Brittany." Parents Television Council Files FCC Indecency Complaint Against X Factor
Wasn’t hard to see this one coming: The Parents Television Council says that it will complain to the FCC that Fox’sThe X Factor violated the broadcast decency rules on Wednesday. The group says that the program, ratedTV-PG DL, showed a contestant, Geo Godley,”dropping his pants and exposing himself during a song and dance routine.” The performance took place shortly after 8:00 PM in the Central and Mountain Time zones, when PTC says indecent content is prohibited on broadcast television. The prolonged, previously videotaped footage of a contestant dancing nude on the X Factor stage represents a conscious decision by the producers with the approval of the networks broadcast standards department to intentionally air this content in front of millions of families during hours when they knew full well that children would be watching,” PTC President Tim Winters says. He added that “If Godley performed his act in public, he would have been arrested. But if he performs it in front of a Fox camera, his act is beamed via the public airwaves into every home in the nation.” X Factor judge Paula Abdul called the performance “shocking and disgusting” while L.A. Reid described it as “offensive, disgusting, distasteful and upsetting.” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Watch Online

Toronto: Madonna, Parties, And Harvey Weinsteins New Premiere World Record
Harvey Weinstein just set a newair, land and sea worldrecord for transporting on movie premieres. The Weinstein Company mogul handled showing up at three, count ‘em, three different premiere occasions by 50 percent different nations all on Monday evening. “Yeah, it had been some lighter moments wasn’t it?” he deadpanned once i asked for him about hislandmark photo-op achievement. Although he has existed Toronto now, Weinsteinhad revisit New You'll be able to City Monday evening to visit the premiere of his company’sromantic comedy I Don’t Know How She'll It, which starsSarah Jessica Parker and opens country wide on Friday. It had been rightback to Canada and a pair of more U . s . States premieres: Madonna’s directorial outing W.E. as well as the Take advantage of Fiennes-directed Coriolanus – which he earned ito toboth publish-parties at Soho House. On one floor he was dining with Madonna and her exclusive guest list, then he did a stroll-throughone floor reduced the Coriolanus preem. It had been keep an eye out to the 3rd floor where he huddled with Jennifer Garner and Olivia Wilde, the celebs of some other Weinstein Company movie, Butter, which premieres here on Tuesday (When i first seen it in Telluride). I am told they'll open the film for just about any one-weekOscar being qualified work on October 28 andreopen it sometime inearly 2012. For that Madonna film, which was criticallylambasted in Venice, the spin I obtained in a single of the worldwide reps could it have been’s not necessarily everything bad. It’s it’s its not all so great either. You will discover some nice visual touches nevertheless the material in regards to the romance between King Edward and Wallis Simpson (put together through the fabric Girlherself) just isn’t everything compelling. My overall impression is always that she'll be suggested for trying various things using this British period piece, but also for someone normally so edgy, this film greatly lacks edge. It's unquestionably an adult person’s movieand facing a frightening commercial climb. Just before the film started (half an hour late) Madonna told the hometown crowd, “As you understand I had been elevated in Detroit Michigan therefore i almost feel Canadian. Even when I have been arrested here' stood a heck of times,” she mentioned. Within the earlierMonday morning press screening apaltry crowd ofless than100 apparently switched up for first chance doing pointing and writing efforts. When it absolutely was finished, under halfremained inside the massive 555-chair ScotiabankTheatre. But carrying out a evening screening within the Roy ThomsonHall, everybody else gave Madonnaa brief standing ovation before vulnerable to the exits. Nevertheless it wasn’t the kind of passionate standing applause heard within the Machine Gun Preacher screening just one evening earlier. Speaking about this film, I taken up having its star Gerard Butler following a premiere of his second film as of this festival, Coriolanus. The response was a lot more subdued for the one. “You could hear a pin drop in people final moments,”he mentioned. He mentioned he was awestruck by Vanessa Redgrave who should emerge since the front runner for top Supporting Actress if the contemporary control over among Shakespeare’s most obscure playsopens later this year. I asked for if he was experiencing his festival understanding about two different films in play which he mentioned it may be a lot more fun if he wasn’t stuck in hotels all day long lengthy doing interviews. He's doing supply the capital of scotland - Toronto kudos though. He reeled off all of the urban centers he’ll be takinghis films to next, beginning with San Francisco Bay Area, so he’s an energetic guy. His next film will probably be Oscar-winnerCurtis Hanson’s surfing drama Mavericks, through which he plays asurfing mentor with a 15-year-old kid. He’s just participating in the surfing training now. I suggested he see the new Greg McGillivray documentary Hollywood Don’t Surf, which examined within the finish of Telluride this year. It’s an enormously entertaining lookat thecheckered good status for Celebrities and surfing and might be veryinstructive for Gerry. Michael Fassbender is anotherhot actor with two films within the festival –Shame andADangerous Method– which younger crowd switched up within the Weinsteinparty. He wasin their Inglorious Basterds despite the fact that boyslost the biddingfor Shame to Searchlight. Each of us visit the fourth-floor ping-pong room concurrently along with his Shame director Steve McQueenand he described he was virtually left without words about acquiring the very best Actor award for Shame within the Venice Film Festival last weekend. I told him I saw the questionable film on sex addiction at Telluride the other day which he mentioned he actually was sorry about requiring to overlook that fest, he heard it absolutely was great. Fassbenderemphasized he hopes people will appreciate the cruel film the means by which filmgoers did regularly inside the seventies, before Hollywood lost its creativemojo. He’svery pleased with Shame and appreciative that Fox Searchlight had the courage to have it. Another actor with two films to push at TIFF is Jessica Chastain who'll get my award for the best new star available. She anxiously anxiously waited years on her behalf extended report on finished films to actually be seen now she's not doing not travelling around marketing them simply because they either hit festivals or emerge someone to another. She appeared to stay in the Weinstein party.Consider The Assistance as well as the Debt, which wereNo. 1 and two at thebox officea week ago. Then there wasWilde Salome with Al Pacino and Texas Killing Fields at Venice now Coriolanus and Rob Nichols’ Take Shelter at TIFF. And don’t disregard the Tree Of Existence which finally got the ball relocating Cannes taken. Despite the fact that it must be a bit of the painto do all this promotion simultaneously, she’s got an excellent attitude and spontaneity relating to this. “I told Rob Nichols before he hired me on ‘Take Shelter’ that you have a Chastain curse so when you hire me your movie will not find yourself getting released, but he mentioned he desired to accept risk anyway,” she jeered (Take Shelter opens September 30). Chastain is anxious that Wilde Salome still doesn’t use a distributor nevertheless it should obtain one eventually. It's Al Pacino ultimately. Among other movies premiering here' caught the charming Lasse Hallstrom comedySalmon Fishing inside the Yemen with two terrific performances from Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt. As Deadline broke on Sunday, the film was acquired by CBS Films which within the youthful history remains known more for much less charming films like the Support Plan, Beastly as well as the Auto specialist. This could class within the joint and supply lately installed academy memberLes Moonvessomethingdecent to push to hisfellow people. I have heard that they wish to turn this film around quickly and acquire it qualified for honours considerationin 2011, another situation from the film while using Toronto ball and running from it. It may be too whimsical for Oscar but sometimes certainly produce a strong Golden Globe run, and possibly even win there. The Lady was the premiere that adopted Madonna’s film tonight at Roy Thomson Hall. It’s director Luc Besson’s true story in the Nobel Peace Prize-winningAung Saan Su Kyi, who increased to become Burmese resistance leader only to occur under house arrest for 15 years.Shewas released last yearbutisstill prevented from getting her people’s struggles against a tyrannical governmentto the outside world. Possibly that’s why starsMichelle Yeoh and David Thewlisand director Luc Besson feel this kind of senseof emergency to acquire this film out this year (when Yeoh and Thewlis might be strong Oscar nomination competitors).I spoken wonderful three earlier today and may publish the most effective of this discussionsoon, however hope are these claims film’s releasewill produce a real difference in their situation much like winning the Nobel Peace Prize did, albeitbriefly. It’s an authentic departure for your more action-oriented Besson and carried out perfectly within the tests hereon Monday.I am told you will discover a couple of likely entrepreneurs circling that certain already. Finally,Summit held a publish-premiere dinner and party for 50/50 cancer comedy starring Ernest Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen, while focusing put a sit-downdinner within the Roosevelt Roomfor their Pariah, a film the distrib will bepushing for Oscars. Thinking about thesuccess in the Oscar-winningPrecious, they may use a real shot although Focus professional Adriene Bowles likens the film more to Winter’s Bone, a Best Picture nominee a year ago.Celebrity Adepero Oduye is a real discovery and personally is not like the character she plays inside the film. Author and director Dee Reessaid the ride since Sundance remains wild but useful. The ride at TIFF remains wild too, but everything good must ended. I’m headingback to L.A. for Emmy week however will invariably keep my attention on Toronto.A wrapof all the fall fests may come after TIFF winds lower a couple of days ago.

'Girl Using The Dragon Tattoo' Photos: Difficulties And Rooney Mara Take Presctiption The Search
The Lady using the Dragon Tattoo is definitely among this winters most anticipated movies, having a solid cast, worldwide known source material, famous director David Fincher as well as the man behind Nine Inch Nails focusing on the score (Trent Reznor, natch). Fortunately, with present day trio of recent "Dragon Tattoo" photos, you will not have to hang about until December 26 to obtain a better consider the film. Stieg Larssons novel of the identical title, which the film relies, is sort of infamous because of its depictions of brutal, sexual violence. While none of that's displayed in new images available at Empire, they are doing provide us with a great look at a few of the storys principal figures. First of all is Difficulties in the role as disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist, creating a horrified face at something off-screen. We now have a concept in which the image is obtained from, but well avoid saying for that six people available who've neither browse the book, seen the Swedish film or already had the storyline spoiled on their behalf. Suffice to express, hes to look concerned. Next is really a shot of Rooney Mara, who plays the feminine lead, eccentric computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, getting together with Yorick van Wageningens Nils Bjurman. Salander is acting strongly toward the taken-aback Bjurman, that is understandable, because the guy may be the worst type of scumbag within the book. Its nice to determine the movie has cast someone as large, burly and imposing as van Wageningen, however. The ultimate image shows Craig once more, but this time around he's talking with Christopher Plummer, who plays family patriarch Henrik Vanger within the film. Hes a vital a part of obtaining the storys plot moving, so expect numerous moments between him and Craig. Its a reasonable wager the two are talking about the situation of Harriet Vanger, Henriks niece who inexplicably disappeared decades earlier, and whom Blomkvist was hired to research. Exactly what do you consider the brand new images in the Girl using the Dragon Tattoo? Are you looking at the film, or would be the book along with a subtitled movie enough for you personally? Rankings Corporate Jungle: Hells Kitchen Slips, NBC Plays Symphony With Ninja Warrior
Fox (2.6/7 in grown ups 18-49, 6.two million audiences) once more capped Monday evening having a Gordon Ramsay selection. After MasterChef wrapped its season a week ago, the network broadcast back-to-back originals of Hell’s Kitchen (2.4/7 at 8 PM and a pair of.7/7 at 9 PM) last evening. The 8 PM episode was lower a tenth in the fast national rating for a week ago’s episode (lower two tenths in the final), as the 9 PM episode was up 13% from what MasterChef published within the hour last Monday. ABC (1.8/5, 5.9 million) was second, paced with a two-hour Bachelor Pad (2.1/6), that is running flat versus. a week ago, but ABC’s fast excellent are inflated due to local National football league preemptions. At NBC, it had been corporate synergy — or as Steve Burke favors to refer to it as, “symphony” — at the office because the network broadcast the 3rd-season finale of G4′s American Ninja Warrior (1.7/4, 4 million) from 9-11 PM. The truth show published NBC’s best 18-49 rating in the timeframe in seven days, since Macy’s 4th of This summer Fireworks Spectacular, but we must observe that the network hadn't broadcast any originals within the slot since, just reruns and repurposed instances of another NBCUniversal cable series, USA’s Law & Order: Criminal Intent. CBS broadcast reruns.

'Fright Night': How The Original Can Inform The Remake
There can only be one original, but that never stopped Hollywood from trying to remake our favorite films. No other genre seems as bloated with remakes as horror, but not every retelling is a terrible thing. "Lars and the Real Girl" director Craig Gillespie will show us what he can do with Tom Holland's 1985 horror classic, "Fright Night," this weekend -- and it got us thinking about all of our favorite moments from the much-loved horror-comedy. The best movie remakes bring something new to the table, but respect the original material. Here are five things we'd love to see in the new "Fright Night" that pay homage to the original story about a seductive, but dangerous, vampire who goes head-to-head with an inquisitive high school student. Doin' It At The Dance Club Our kingdom for a cheesy sexytime scene at a dance club. It won't have the feathered hair, new wave music, or Cosby sweater-on-disco outfits, but some kind of nod to the hilarious yet still sultry dance sequence in the original "Fright Night" would be aces. Chris Sarandon made Jerry totally crushable, and his smooth moves on the dance floor which he used to seduce Charlie's girlfriend Amy is one of the movie's most memorable moments. Every Vampire Needs A Henchman Dracula had Renfield, and Jerry had Billy. The new Jerry needs a henchman, a sidekick, a best pal who is willing to fight to the death to protect his dawg. It's vampire law or something. What the hell was Billy, anyway? (Aside from being some kind of too-close-for comfort weirdo that gave everyone rape eyes when they tried to get near Jerry.) Billy Cole suffered the fate of every 1980's horror fiend when he tried to defend Jerry that of the inevitable melting effect, which turned him into a pile of green, bubbling goo. That's real love and brings us to our next point. Dear 3-D: Respect Your Elders The 1985 "Fright Night" plays to some serious horror fanboy/girl love. It references a ton of old school scary stuff. Even the character of Peter Vincent is a tribute to horror legends Peter Cushing and Vincent Price. That's why the movie's practical FX, though terribly dated now, work. There was clearly a lot of love put into creating those melty faces and ill-fitting fangs. The new film is promising 3-D horror, but we'd kill for a few true blue effects that don't involve a computer. And please, no CGI blood. Payback Is A Bitch Nerds. Will. Attack. Let's face it, in the original film Charlie's kind of a jerk for ignoring his girlfriend, being a tool to best friend Evil (who, yes, can certainly dish it out), and generally acting like a little jerk. That's what makes it so sweet when his highly quotable, best bud Evil Ed opens up a can of whoop ass and becomes empowered with his newfound fangs after Jerry transforms him into a bloodsucker. You want the crabby and crazy horror nerd to win! Here's hoping Christopher Mintz-Plasse can bring it. Killer Dialogue Director/writer Tom Holland did a fine job with the original "Fright Night's" script. There's some curious subtext, which is unexpected for what was supposed to be a B-grade horror movie, as well as smart and genuinely funny lines. Former "Buffy the Vampire" scribe, Marti Noxon, takes over script duties for the remake, and while her experience with vamps in the past and penchant for writing strong, interesting characters makes us hopeful that the dialogue won't suck, there's no telling until we're in that theater seat. So far the tone of the trailers have pitched the movie as super serious. Hopefully there will be plenty of room for a few good laughs too. Tell us what you want to see carried over from the original "Fright Night" into this week's remake in the comments section and on Twitter!

Bradley Cooper Exits 'The Crow' as Other Actors Circle (Exclusive)
Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images "As the crow flies" may denote the shortest route from one place to another, but the movie version of The Crow is proving to be less than a straight shot. Relativity is remaking the supernatural action movie based on the 1990s comic and has set Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct. Bradley Cooper was to have played the title character but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he has now exited due to scheduling conflicts. Cooper has David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook shooting this fall and then dives straight into Legendary's Paradise Lost, which shoots first quarter next year...the exact time Relativity plans on making the high-priority Crow. But akin to the project's rock musician who is killed and resurrected, two new names have surfaced as possible replacements: Channing Tatum and Mark Wahlberg. Walhberg has a previous association with the Crow; he was offered the part last fall but a deal never materialized. But there is a question as to whether he wants to revisit the role, and last week he signed on to Universal's 2 Guns action pic. Tatum is best known for his work in G.I. Joe and the weepie Dear John. It's too early to tell what will happen with either Tatum or Walhberg, or whether other actors join the fray, although Relativity is keen on not wasting time. The studio also is embroiled in litigation with The Weinstein Co. over distribution rights to the film. Harvey and Co. believe they have a deal to release the film but Relativity argues that the Weinsteins forfeited their right by, among other things, botching the release of the expensive Relativity-backed flop Nine. That case is currently in arbitration. Crow, created by James O'Barr, centered on a musician who is murdered while trying to save his fiancée from thugs. He is brought back from the dead by supernatural forces and seeks revenge. The role was originally played by Brandon Lee, who was killed by a freak accident during production of the original movie in 1993. The new film is being produced by Edward R. Pressman, Jeff Most, Relativity's CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Apaches Entertainment's Enrique LopezLavigne and Belen Atienza. Relativity had no comment.
